Understanding Total Dynamic Head in GCC Dewatering

The Total Dynamic Head Equation

In pump selection, TDH represents the total equivalent height that a fluid must be lifted, taking into account both vertical distance and the energy lost to friction inside the hose or pipe:

TDH = Static Elevation Lift + Friction Head Loss (hf) + Minor Losses (valves & couplings)

Why Proper Sizing Matters on Construction Sites:

  • Undersizing Risk: An undersized pump will fail to reach the discharge rim of deep shoring pits, leading to flooded basements and costly contractor downtime.
  • Oversizing Risk: An oversized pump operates too far to the right of its Best Efficiency Point (BEP), drawing excessive amperage, tripping generator breakers, and eroding impellers prematurely.
  • Saline Groundwater Correction: Water in coastal Dubai (JBR, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Islands) contains high salinity (specific gravity ~ 1.03 - 1.08), increasing shaft torque requirements.
